Songs of the Giants

Songs of the Giants is an original acrylic painting depicting two humpback whales breaking the surface of deep blue water, with seagulls moving across a wide, open sky.

This painting developed from an earlier work beneath the surface that I was not satisfied with. Rather than removing it, I covered the existing acrylic texture with heavy layers of blue paint. The texture from the original painting remains and shapes the movement of the sea, giving the surface a depth that emerged through the process rather than being planned.

The work is created with acrylic paint and modelling paste on canvas and includes subtle silver detailing in the corners. It is unframed.

Painted in 2024, the piece is inspired by my trips to the south of Ireland, where humpback whales can be sighted during the autumn and early winter months.
